The Tennessee STEP UP Scholarship aims to support students with intellectual disabilities who have graduated from high school and are pursuing an individualized program of study lasting up to four years at an eligible postsecondary institution.

The scholarship provides up to $2,250 per semester for full-time enrollment during the freshman and sophomore years, and up to $2,850 per semester during the junior and senior years.

The student’s class status, whether freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, is determined by the postsecondary institution.

It’s important to note that the total financial aid, including the Tennessee STEP UP Scholarship, cannot surpass the institution’s defined total cost of education.

If the cost exceeds this limit, the Tennessee STEP UP Scholarship may be adjusted accordingly.


Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, the applicant must:

1. Not meet the disqualification criteria outlined in § 49-4-904 for the scholarship.

2. Have Tennessee residency status as determined by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

3. Graduate from a Tennessee high school, meeting the requirements specified in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), and obtain a high school diploma, occupational diploma or certificate, special education diploma, transition certificate, or an IEP certificate.

4. Gain admission to and enroll in an eligible postsecondary institution within 16 months of high school completion.

5. Apply for the Tennessee STEP UP Scholarship each academic year.

Application Process

To apply for the STEP UP Scholarship, students and parents should fill out the scholarship application and send the completed form to STEPUP.program@tn.gov via email. Additionally, recipients are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each academic year.

Application Deadline

The deadlines to complete both applications are:

Fall Semester–September 1

Spring Semester–February 1

Summer Semester–May 1

Termination Criteria

To remain eligible for a Tennessee STEP UP Scholarship, a student must:

1. Stay continuously enrolled in the eligible postsecondary program, as outlined by the respective institution.

2. Achieve satisfactory academic progress in their chosen program of study, as assessed by the eligible postsecondary institution.

A student can receive the Tennessee STEP UP scholarship until the earlier of either:

1. Obtaining a credential that signifies the completion of the postsecondary program, or

2. Expiration of the required period to finish the eligible postsecondary program.
