Sports Medicine Fellowship: Their goal is to develop highly qualified sports medicine doctors who are prepared for lifelong learning and are well-suited for a rewarding career in the field.

Our fellows provide sports medicine services to clients from Gainesville and beyond during their training.

In terms of age, gender, color, ethnicity, and athletic prowess, these patients span a wide spectrum.

Sports Medicine Fellowship Mission

Our goal is to produce outstanding sports medicine doctors who are prepared for a successful and rewarding career in the field and who are equipped for lifelong learning.

While undergoing training, our fellows treat patients from outside of Gainesville who are in need of sports medical care. The age, gender, color, ethnicity, and athletic prowess of these patients vary.

Sports Medicine Fellowship Eligible Criteria

Our ACGME-accredited fellowship program includes space for a maximum of three fellows per year.

It accepts applications from those with training in pediatrics, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family medicine, and emergency medicine.

Applicants must have finished their residency training in a school that has earned ACGME accreditation in order to be considered. J-1 Visa candidates cannot submit applications at this time.

What and Where You’ll Learn

Our 12-month curriculum gives the fellow instruction and lots of exposure to UF sporting teams, events, and the surrounding region of North Florida.

The University Athletic Association’s training rooms and facilities, the UF Student Health Care Center, and the UF Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute are where most activities take place on the UF campus.

Experiences: Cadaver-based Anatomy; Physical Therapy; Sports Performance; Sports Cardiology; Musculoskeletal Radiology; Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Curriculum; Orthopedic Rotations in: Pediatrics, Upper Extremity, Foot & Ankle, and Sports Surgery; Concussion Management; Acute Care and College Health.

University of Florida, Santa Fe College, and high schools in Alachua County are the teams that are covered. All sports and numerous post-season competitions fall under this.

Florida Relays: Widespread Coverage.

Learning on the Go: Intermountain Healthcare in Park City, Utah’s Sports Performance rotation; the AMSSM National Meeting; the Orlando, Florida, World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. (WWE) Performance Center; and other UF Athletics away and post-season contests. Financial assistance is offered.

Scholarly Activity: Research project (faculty support with preparation and IRB approval); writing project (faculty with several projects for fellow involvement); weekly didactic meetings with fellows on subjects likely to be addressed on the CAQ exam.

Clinical Experience

  • Treatment for sudden, repetitive motion, and long-term sports and musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of non-operative sports conditions through a broad-based sports education program.
  • Sports-related medical treatment for children and adults in primary care settings.
  • Extensive experience using ultrasonography for musculoskeletal diagnosis and intervention.
  • Rotations with subspecialists in orthopedic and sports medicine.
  • Sports competitions, pre-participation tests, and training room coverage at Johns Hopkins University Athletics and nearby secondary schools.
  • Including rotations at the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s youth concussion clinic, and sports concussion treatments.
  • Sports performance includes strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sports psychology.
  • Muscle and bone imaging
  • Large-scale sporting activities

Educational Experience

  • Weekly didactics in primary care primary sports medicine
  • Grand rounds in institutional sports medicine
  • Orthopedic Sports Division and the Sports Medicine Journal Club
  • Weekly didactics for musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Joint interactive classroom sessions with the Sports Medicine Exercise physiology, nutrition, strength training, and sports medicine performance are all covered in the physical therapy program.
