SMART Scholarship Program

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, sponsored by the Department of Defense (DoD), provides a comprehensive educational and workforce development initiative for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The SMART program extends scholarships to students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels who are actively pursuing degrees in any of the 24 STEM disciplines.

Successful SMART scholars benefit from full tuition coverage, annual stipends, and assured employment opportunities with the Department of Defense upon completion of their studies.


Benefits of the SMART Scholarship

1. Complete coverage of tuition and education-related fees (excluding expenses like meal plans, housing, or parking).

2. Stipends ranging from $25,000 to $38,000 annually, contingent on the pursued degree (subject to proration based on the duration of the award).

3. Summer research internships spanning 8 to 12 weeks.

4. Health insurance allowance of up to $1,200 per academic year.

5. Miscellaneous allowance amounting to $1,000 per academic year.

6. Guidance from an experienced mentor at one of the Sponsoring Facilities.

7. Assured employment placement at a Department of Defense (DoD) facility upon successful completion of the degree.

SMART Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

The SMART application period spans from August to December annually, with awards announced in the subsequent spring. To be eligible, all applicants must:

1. Be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom at the time of application.

2. Be 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2024.

3. Request at least 1 year of degree funding before graduation, starting from the program’s commencement date.

4. Be capable of completing at least one summer internship (for multi-year scholars only).

5. Be willing to accept post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense (DoD).

6. Be a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

7. Be pursuing a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 24 STEM disciplines listed below.

8. Be able to provide a fall 2023 college transcript from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

For active duty military members applying for the SMART Scholarship, eligibility requires separation or being on terminal leave on or before August 1, 2024. Reserve and National Guard members are eligible to apply, while current ROTC participants with a future service commitment are not eligible to apply.

Kindly be aware that SMART does not approve or provide funding for non-technical degrees, including those in management, arts, or humanities.
