PTDF Scholarship: Awards will be given for studies in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, France (through Campus France), Top Institutions in the United States of America, as well as Federal Universities and Centers of Excellence in Nigeria. 

PTDF Scholarship

The PTDF Scholarship 2024 scheme is open to qualified students from abroad and locally for M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses.

Through research and training of Nigerians, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, aims to develop and promote petroleum technology as well as meet the needs of the oil and gas industry for human resources.

About the PTDF Scholarship Award

In order to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a federal government agency, is accepting applications from qualified individuals for overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships at institutions as part of its strategic partnership initiative. 

Scholarships for study in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Malaysia will be given to the chosen candidates beginning with the academic year 2024.

Eligibility for PTDF Overseas Masters & PhD Scholarships:

For Ph.D Applicants:

Please make sure you comply with the following prerequisites:

  • completion of the National Youth Service (NYSC), which is required.
  • proficiency with a computer
  • First degree with a Second Class Lower (2.2) minimum and a respectable second-degree certificate
  • A five-page maximum study proposal on a subject pertinent to the oil and gas sector that includes an introduction, an objective, a methodology, and a method of data gathering
  • A letter from the lecturer’s vice chancellor stating that they are not receiving any other scholarships is required.
  • Prior to applying for the scholarship, you must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and have successfully completed NIMC verification (fees may apply).

For M.Sc Applicants:

Please be aware of the following prerequisites:

  • A first degree with at least Second Class Upper (2.1) or Second Class Lower (2.2) and appropriate work experience
  • completion of the National Youth Service (NYSC), which is required.
  • proficiency with a computer
  • At least five O/level credits, including English and math, are required.
  • A 500-word maximum statement of purpose outlining the goals of the proposed study, its significance to the sector, and any potential effects on national development
  • Prior to applying for the scholarship, you must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and have successfully completed NIMC verification (fees may apply).

Required Documents

  • Results for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), General Certificate of Education (GCE), Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), or National Examinations Council (NECO) with relevant PINs on the application form for PTDF to verify on the relevant website. Certificate or Statement of Result for First Degree Discharge certificate from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
  • a current passport photo
  • Master’s degree certificate (required exclusively for PhD applicants) Letter of identity from the local government
  • evidence of affiliation with professional organizations

Selection Criteria

Scholarships from the PTDF are extremely competitive, and only the best applicants are chosen. The following criteria will be used by a selection committee to evaluate applications:

  • Academic merit as demonstrated by the caliber of degrees, complete academic transcripts, further professional certifications obtained, and pertinent publications that applicants can cite
  • involvement in professional organizations
  • The feasibility of the research or study plan.
  • In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must submit a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) outlining their motivation(s) for the study, how it relates to the oil and gas business, and how it will affect the development of the country.

How to Apply for PTDF Overseas Masters & PhD Scholarships

  • Candidates are asked to submit applications through PTDF for specialized programs at partner universities in any of the participating nations (a complete list of sponsored courses is available on our websites, www.ptdf.gov.ng and scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng). 
  • It is recommended that applicants scan and upload the following documents to their online application:
  • First Degree Certificate or Statement of Results WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results Local Government Identification Letter NYSC discharge certificate
  • Certificate of Master’s Degree (Only for PhD Applicants)
  • evidence of professional association membership

Important Notes

1. Overseas Master and Ph.D. Scholarships from PTDF Before submitting an application for the scholarship, candidates must have a National Identity Number (NIN). Before submitting the application, applicants must also confirm their NIN. (There may be fees associated with this).

2. Current Ph.D. candidates may only submit an application if their universities are among those listed as PTDF Partnership Universities;

3. Candidates who have previously received one of the PTDF scholarships are not eligible to apply for the same program, with the exception of a higher program;

4. Candidates with higher degrees are not eligible to apply for the same sort of program.

5. Candidates who have received any other scholarship are not required to apply;

6. All applicants are urged to prepare their transcripts for submission in anticipation of such a request since only those who pass the first round of screening will be asked to submit them.
