About The Obafemi Awolowo University

Arieh Sharon oversaw the architectural planning of the university with a team that subsequently included his son Eldar and Augustine Akhuemokhan Egbor of Lagos.

Three settlements were the initial layout for the property. Housing the academic and administrative buildings, staff quarters with residential buildings scattered for privacy needs, and student residence halls is a core campus with a high density and degree of centralization.

The roads in the university are numbered, and Route One, a 2.5 km route that leads to the major core and two rocky hills, serves as the main entrance.

The Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Secretariat, University Bookshop, Oduduwa Hall, and the Faculties of Arts, Education, Law, Administration, and Social Sciences make up the core, which is a quadrangle made up of the university’s public buildings.

The Humanities building, which consists of three blocks with four floors each, was the first building to be finished in January 1967. These blocks are connected by walkways to the other faculties in the quad.

When completed, these constructions might resemble enormous boats or inverted pyramids, but the design was designed with the humid, tropical climate in mind so that each story protects the one below.

There are piazzas, gardens, and terraces in addition to pedestrian walkways and pergolas that allow circulation between the offices in the quadrangle. Roadways surround the quad on all four sides, while faculty buildings are located beyond the roadways.

The student union building is accessible from the southern end (road two) or front of the main core. The Faculty of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as well as the Computer Science building, are located along Road 2.

Access to the Modern Languages building and the African traditional-styled building containing the African Studies department, a museum, and an exhibition hall is provided via Road 5 on the outside road at the northwest corner of the quad.
