The National Merit Scholarship is the University’s highest honor for incoming freshmen who achieve National Merit Finalist status and designate our University as their primary choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by May 1.

This scholarship grants $16,000 annually throughout four continuous years of undergraduate study at the University of Nevada, Reno.


Eligibility and Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must satisfy the following requirements:

1. Submit a comprehensive application for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno by February 1.

2. Attain “Finalist” status (Semifinalists will receive notification of their status from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in February).

3. Finalists will receive an invitation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to designate their preferred school. Those choosing the University of Nevada, Reno as their primary choice before May 1 will qualify for a scholarship of up to $16,000 per year.

4. The scholarship must be officially accepted in writing and submitted to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships by June 1 (fax: 775-784-1025 or MS 0076, Reno, NV 89557).

5. Finalists must confirm admission through MyNEVADA by June 1.

6. To maintain the award, students must uphold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 at the University of Nevada, Reno and complete 15 credits each fall and spring.

Important Note: National Merit Scholars do not qualify for need-based grants, including the Nevada Guarantee, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and State Access grants.
