About JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was established by an Act of 1978 and underwent revisions in 1989 and 1993.

The Act grants the Board the power to place suitably qualified candidates in postsecondary institutions in collaboration with those institutions; assign examiners, moderators, invigilators, members of subject panels and committees, and other individuals.

With regard to matriculation examinations; and exercise general control over the conduct of matriculation examinations into all Universities, Monotechnics, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.

To fulfill these responsibilities, the Board offers a matriculation exam to candidates wishing to be accepted into postsecondary educational institutions in the country. This test is known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Eligibility for the Examination

One is eligible to take the UTME if they possess the following qualifications or their equivalents: the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE), the West African School Certificate (WASC), the National Technical Certificate Teachers’ Certificate in Grade II, or the National Business Certificate (NBC).

If an applicant has taken or is expected to take an exam for any of these qualifications in the year of application, they are also eligible to take the UTME.

Structure of the Examination

The UTME’s computer-based exam style is offered once a year. The exam comprises four two-hour multiple-choice questions covering three more subjects the candidate may pick from and the use of English as a mandatory subject.

Prospective candidates are advised to speak with their teachers, parents or guardians, or career counselors while choosing their elective topics for the UTME.

It is advised that candidates familiarize themselves with the features of the computer-based test by using the free CBT practice test platform.

Admission Requirements

Potential Candidates for the UTME should be informed that they must pass the applicable WAEC/NECO SSCE/Teachers’ Grade II test with credit in five topics in addition to achieving an adequate pass grade in the UTME in order to be admitted to a postsecondary education program.

Obtaining the necessary credit/merit passes in no more than two sittings is advised. Generally speaking, unless otherwise noted, credit passes in math and English language are required for all higher education courses.

In addition to the broad qualifications mentioned above, candidates must also meet any additional specific requirements for admittance.

Candidates are therefore urged to study the pertinent sections of the UTME/DE manual in order to gain additional insight into the specific requirements for certain programs.

It’s also important to keep in mind that admissions are governed by broad policies that university owners frequently declare. These regulations may include admissions quotas that the institutions and the Board are required to adhere to or implementation recommendations.

1. Islamic Studies Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board test is the goal of the Islamic Studies Unified Tertiary Matriculation test (UTME) syllabus.

Examining students’ mastery of the Qur’an and Sunnah as the cornerstones of Islamic and social life; familiarity with Islamic heritage, culture, and civilization; familiarity with the tradition of Islamic scholarship and intellectual discourse.

Demonstration of knowledge of Islamic moral, spiritual, political, and social values; and readiness to face life’s challenges as a devout Muslim are the goals of this course.

2. Use of English Syllabus

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) English Use Syllabus is designed to aid candidates in getting ready for the Board exam.

Its purpose is to gauge a candidate’s capacity to: (i) communicate clearly in written and spoken English; and (ii) use English as a tool for tertiary-level learning.

3. Syllabus For Mathematics

Preparing candidates for the Board examination is the goal of the mathematics curriculum for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

It is intended to assess students’ mastery of the following course objectives: (1) gain computational and manipulative skills; (2) cultivate formal, logical, and precise reasoning skills; (3) cultivate deductive skills in the interpretation of graphs, diagrams, and data; and (4) apply mathematical concepts to everyday problems.

4.  Agriculture Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board test is the goal of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation test Syllabus in Agriculture. It is intended to evaluate their performance in meeting the course objectives, which include:

  • Igniting and maintaining their interest in agriculture
  • Gaining a foundational understanding of the field and practical skills in it
  • Learning how to interpret and apply data
  • Igniting their capacity to draw conclusions from the knowledge they have gained in agriculture.

5.  Jamb Arabic Syllabus

Preparing applicants for admission to tertiary institutions through the Board’s examination is the goal of the Arabic Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Syllabus.

It is intended to assess students’ mastery of the following course objectives: correctly respond to comprehension questions in standard Arabic; and translate simple texts from English to Arabic and vice versa.

Utilize Arabic grammar rules in a practical manner; recognize and appreciate Arabic literary texts in the context of their surroundings and eras; and, when needed, use Arabic as a living language in communication.

6.  Jamb Art Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board test is the goal of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation test (UTME) Art Syllabus. It is meant to assess their mastery of the following course objectives:

1. demonstrate understanding of the basic components, ideas, and vocabulary of art;

2. demonstrate understanding of the historical aspects of art, with a focus on Nigerian crafts and arts;

3. demonstrate understanding of artistic processes, materials, and equipment maintenance;

4. demonstrate aesthetic awareness of the surrounding environment, significance, and roles of art in society.

7.  Jamb Biology Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board test is the goal of the biology Unified Tertiary Matriculation test (UTME) syllabus. It is intended to assess students’ mastery of the following course objectives:

1. show a sufficient understanding of the concepts of diversity, interdependence, and unity of life;

2. explain how life continues through reorganization, inheritance, and evolution;

3. apply biological concepts and principles to everyday situations, particularly those that have an impact on people’s health, the environment, society, and the economy.

8. Jamb Chemistry Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board test is the goal of the Chemistry Unified Tertiary Matriculation test (UTME) syllabus.

It is intended to assess their mastery of the following course objectives: (i) comprehend chemistry’s fundamental ideas and concepts; (ii) analyze scientific data pertaining to chemistry; (iii) infer connections between chemistry and other sciences; and (iv) apply chemistry knowledge to business and daily life.

9. Jamb Commerce Syllabus

Preparing candidates for the Board examination is the goal of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Commerce Syllabus.

The purpose of the test is to gauge the students’ comprehension of the following course objectives: (1) learn the fundamentals of commerce; (2) investigate the connections between commerce and other related fields; (3) apply commerce principles to the Nigerian economy; and (4) recognize positive and dynamic changes in commercial activities.

10. Jamb CRS Syllabus

The purpose of the Christian Religious Studies Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Syllabus is to get candidates ready for the Board test. It is intended to assess students’ mastery of the following course objectives:

1. gain knowledge and comprehension of the Christian faith as it is revealed in the Bible;

2. interpret biblical themes and teachings;

3. apply biblical themes and teachings to everyday life in society;

4. assess the degree to which biblical themes and teachings are applied to everyday life in society.
