About the University

In 1981, the Imo State House of Assembly passed Law No. 4, which established the Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. On October 23, 1981, the university accepted its first class of 392 pioneer students.

The university’s Uturu campus became Abia State University following Abia State’s establishment in 1991. Imo State University operates on a fully operational basis. The National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to the majority of the university’s programs.

The National Universities Commission‘s (NUC) 1999–2000 accreditation results attested to the university’s high acceptance rate among Nigerians. The university was placed 10th overall among state and federal universities and first among Nigeria’s state universities. 

During the administration of former Governor Rochas Okorocha, Imo State University offered free education to Imo state natives; however, the program was discontinued in 2016. 

The Registrar, Professor Emeka Ejinkonye, announced on behalf of the Acting Vice Chancellor of IMSU, Professor Adaobi Obasi, stating that students of Imo origin would now pay a token for certain services provided by the school.

How to Apply

  • Go to www.imsu.edu.ng, the university’s website, and select Admissions from the homepage’s top menu.
  • The portal’s admissions section will be displayed to you; click on Apply for 2021/2022 Post-UTME/Direct Entry and choose between Post-UTME and Direct Entry.
  • Enter your email address, phone number, password, and JAMB registration number to sign up.
  • Check your email from your account, then go back to the portal to pay the N2,000 application fee for Post-UTME/Direct Entry.
  • Make a payment using your card online or obtain a reference number, pay in person at any bank branch of your choosing, and then return to complete the application.
  • In the event that your payment was accepted, you will see an option to proceed with your application, clicking on which will take you to the application form.
  • After accurately and completely filling out the form, click submit at the bottom of the page.
  • In the unlikely event that you are unable to finish your application, you can always go back to the admission portal at https://admissions.imsu.edu.ng, create an account, and finish your application before the deadline.
  • Once your application has been submitted, print the acknowledgment slip and bring it to the university on the day of the Post-UTME/Direct Entry screening that the university will later announce.
