The fellowship has supported more than 18,000 exceptional scientists, writers, artists, and intellectuals, advancing knowledge and giving precious original research and creative works to society.

Guggenheim Fellowships are awarded to people who have previously demonstrated a remarkable potential for constructive scholarship or a remarkable artistic skill. A Guggenheim Fellowship is awarded for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months.

What to Know About Guggenheim Fellowship

People in the middle of their careers who have shown exceptional promise for innovative and fruitful intellectual work or exceptional artistic talent, giving tremendous promise for their future endeavors, are given Guggenheim Fellowships.

The annual competition that awards these scholarships is open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. To be considered, candidates must submit their applications to the Guggenheim Foundation.

The Foundation accepts more than 3,000 applications annually. There is no guarantee that any candidate will be successful because there is no preliminary screening and all applications are thoroughly examined. Approximately 175 Fellowships are given annually.

Candidates are first matched with peers in the same industry and evaluated by experts in that specific subject as part of a meticulous screening process.

Artists are judged by other artists; scientists are judged by scientists; historians are judged by other historians, and so on.

The Foundation’s advisory board is comprised of several hundred individuals, all of whom have previously been Guggenheim Fellows.

These advisers get application papers to review remotely or meet in person at the Foundation’s headquarters to assess candidates’ work.


Eligibility Requirement and Criteria

All candidates must be citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States or Canada at the time of application.

Those who have already received a Guggenheim Fellowship are not qualified to apply again. Guggenheim Fellowships cannot be used to support the creation of curriculum, residencies, websites or blogs, or any other type of educational program.

It is not possible for graduate, undergraduate, or postgraduate students to apply for Guggenheim Fellowships. After that, these advisors rate the submissions based on their level of knowledge and provide input. 

Following receipt of their recommendations, the Selection Committee carefully considers and determines the appropriate number of awards for each category.

Occasionally, there could not be any applications in a certain field that are thought to be good enough to be awarded a Fellowship.

How Do You Get A Guggenheim Fellowship?

Ingpenheim Fellowships are available to mid-career individuals who have demonstrated their sector knowledge or expertise, such as published book authors.

Fellowships are not available to students writers or artists of works meant for young audiences.

Also, applicants must include a portfolio, a resume, and references. Every year, only roughly 175 Fellowships are given out of 3,000–4,000 applications. You must also be a citizen of the United States, Canada, or both, or a lawful permanent resident of either country.
