Goldwater Scholarship

Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by the United States Congress in 1986 as a tribute to Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who dedicated 56 years to serving his country as a soldier and statesman, with 30 years in the U.S. Senate.

The Program’s objective is to address the pressing shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, both presently and in the future.

All individuals seeking scholarships must be nominated by their college or university. The Foundation does not actively seek or accept direct applications from candidates but guides applicants on the appropriate nomination procedures.

Scholarships of up to $7,500 annually are offered to assist with the cost of books, lodging & board, obligatory fees, and tuition.

A Goldwater Scholarship recipient as a sophomore is eligible to receive up to $7,500 in scholarships for their junior and senior years.

A junior who is awarded a Goldwater Scholarship in their senior year is eligible to receive up to $7,500.

Eligibility Criteria

1. A student must be a full-time, matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an approved institution of higher education to be eligible for nomination as a Goldwater Scholar.

2. Hold a college degree with a minimum grade point average of “B” (or its equivalent) and rank in the top four of their class.

3. Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or a national of the United States in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands.

Selection Criteria

The Foundation Board of Trustees will take into account the nominee’s field of study, professional goals, and degree of potential to make a major contribution to their field when deciding which scholarships to award.

Candidates are judged on their academic performance as well as their evidence of dedication to a career in engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences.

A statement of interest in a profession in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, together with information on how their academic program and overall educational plans would prepare them for their chosen career objective, must be included in the online application of nominees for the Goldwater Scholarships.

It is anticipated that scholars will go on to get graduate degrees.
