Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship: The Ford Foundation Fellowships are designed to increase the number of professors.

Who is able and willing to use diversity as a resource to enhance the education of all students, broaden the racial and ethnic composition of the nation’s college and university faculties, and maximize the educational benefits of diversity?

Ford achieves these objectives through providing a variety of fellowships that are appropriate for different academic levels as well as mentoring, professional development, and a significant alumni network that encourages peer support and community building.

About Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship 

Under the initiative, roughly 60 predoctoral fellowships will be awarded. For people pursuing doctoral studies for the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (ScD), these grants provide three years of financial support.

On behalf of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies, the Ford Foundation will hold a countrywide competition to award predoctoral fellowships.

The honors intended for a career in college or university teaching and research will be given to people who, in the judgment of the review panels: Have demonstrated high academic success.

Additionally, show that you have the potential to succeed in the future and that you are willing to use diversity as a resource to improve the education of all your kids.

Eligible Fields of Study

The research-based Ph.D. or Sc.D. programs that will receive grants for study cover the following primary disciplines and related interdisciplinary topics:

  • Language
  • Life sciences
  • Linguistics
  • Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Performance studies
  • Philosophy
  • Physics
  • Political science,
  • Psychology
  • Religious studies
  • Sociology
  • Urban planning
  • Women’s studies
  • Anthropology
  • Chemistry
  • Communications
  • Computer science
  • Earth sciences
  • Economics
  • Engineering
  • Ethnic studies
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Geography
  • History
  • International relations
  • Urban planning is among the fields covered.

Area studies, peace studies, social justice, and other ethnic studies, such as African-American and Native-American studies, are also appropriate examples of interdisciplinary curricula.

The candidate must state their major subject of study above if their Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree is in a research-based area of education (such as sociology of education or anthropology and education).

Eligibility of the Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship 

  • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Graduating seniors, first- and second-year graduate students, as well as those with less graduate experience, must hold a bachelor’s degree by the start of the award term.
  • Enrolled or getting ready to enroll in a Ph.D. or Sc.D. program at an approved university in the United States that emphasizes research Source of funding

Criteria for Selection

  • Superior academic achievement should be demonstrated.
  • Are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level and demonstrate potential for academic and teaching success in the future
  • They are prepared to employ variety as a tool to raise the educational standards for all children.
  • Be a part of an ethnic group that has historically been notably underrepresented in the American professoriate: Native Americans of Alaska, those of Black or African heritage, those from Mexico, those from the United States, and those from the Pacific Islands are all Native Americans.

Application Procedure

There is no Princeton application process for the Ford Scholarship. Students submit direct applications to the Ford Foundation with:

  • Online application
  • Previous research statement
  • Academic work research proposal statement
  • A unique assertion
  • Four letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts

Award

Ford Fellows get a $27,000 stipend over the course of three years. A Ford Fellows Conference invitation. 

Access to extra networking resources as well as the network of former Ford Fellows who have volunteered to guide and assist current Fellows, known as the Ford Fellow Regional Liaisons.
