The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program offers financial support to exceptional postdoctoral candidates, both from within the country and around the world, who are poised to make significant contributions to the economic, social, and research-driven advancement of the nation.

The fellowship is worth $70,000 per year for a duration of two years, with an equal distribution of funds from the CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC agencies. It’s important to note that this award does not cover research expenses.

Objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

The primary goal of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to achieve the following:

1. Attract and retain exceptional postdoctoral talent from both domestic and international sources.

2. Cultivate their leadership capabilities.

3. Prepare them for future success as leaders in the field of research.

What sets the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship program apart is its strong emphasis on the interaction between two key components:

4. The applicant, considering their individual qualifications and potential to embark on a successful, research-focused career.

5. The host institution, must demonstrate a commitment to the research program and alignment with the institution’s strategic objectives.

Applicants for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program are required to collaborate closely with the proposed host institution when completing their application.

Eligibility Criteria

Before applying, candidates must make sure they and the host institution fit the requirements for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. The following is a list of the fellowship’s eligibility requirements:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or international students
  • Attained the Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent, or health professional degree by fulfilling all degree requirements
  • The degree must be finished before the beginning of its award, between September 15, 2018, and September 30, 2023.

Host Institution Eligibility: 

  • Canadian universities
  • Foreign universities
  • Affiliated academic institutions, hospitals, and nonprofits that conduct research.

If the applicant has previously received a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, they will be deemed ineligible. Applications will be considered ineligible if they do not satisfy all of the requirements. It is not the goal of this fellowship for students to earn a degree, especially health professionals.

Note: Under certain circumstances, such as parental leave, illness, health-related family responsibilities, necessary military duty, and disruptions resulting from war, civil conflicts, or natural disasters in the applicant’s area of residence, the eligibility window may be extended by a maximum of two years.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting an application for institutional review differs depending on the faculty. Please refer to your Faculty Contact for specific details.

The final deadline for submission on ResearchNet for applicants recommended by institutions is 8:00 PM EDT on September 20, 2023. The funding decision results will be released in mid-February 2024.

Selection Process

The selection committee reviews each and every application for an eligible Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. The applications are first sorted before being forwarded to the appropriate government funding agencies.

  • Applications related to health research will be forwarded to the selection committee of the (CIHR).
  • Applications to the (NSERC) selection committee in the fields of engineering and/or natural sciences
  • Applications pertaining to the humanities and/or social sciences should be sent to the SSHRC selection committee.

Three equally weighted selection criteria are used to choose a candidate:

  • Based on prior records, the applicant’s research excellence displayed leadership abilities in his or her field and a research contribution to the target groups.
  • The caliber and promise of the applicant’s suggested research projects, as well as the expected social effects of the projects if they are completed effectively.
